Realt Dearg kickstarted their Championship campaign with an excellent team performance to defeat Naomh Olaf in Sandyford on Thursday evening.
The stars were quick out of the traps and raced into an early lead with points from John Tarpey and Mike Richardson which preceded an early goal when a long range speculative effort from Denis O’Sullivan found the net.
This lead was extended further when Eugene Kenny rounded his man with a DJ-esque turn and finished superbly to the net to commence what would be a rewarding night for the big full forward.
At the other end the backline were on top and were only breached once when Gary Thompson was forced into an excellent save at a vital time of the game.
Midway through the half however the Realt Dearg momentum was broken when injuries forced off Mike Richardson and Ronan Moloney and a rejigging of the pack was needed. Naomh Olaf gradually came into the game and at half time were still very much in the contest at 2-8 to 0-6.
Realt Dearg began the second half as they had the first however with early scores from Kevin Ryan, John Tarpey and a second Kenny goal.
This killed the game as a contest but the stars refused to take their foot off the gas and Ultan Dillon, Cathal Hester and Micheál Curtin were ensuring that there would be no soft scores coughed up.
The excellent Niall Mullane, Kevin Ryan, Denis O’Sullivan and John Tarpey all added points in the closing 15 minutes to complement two more Eugene Kenny goals to round off a comprehensive win.
