Realt Dearg A 2-09 St Patricks, Donabate 1-12 (Draw)
Drimnagh Castle, Sunday 29 March 2015 12pm In a game heavily affected by a strong wind Donabate adapted well to the conditions leading 7 points to 5 at half time. St Pats started very strongly in the second half with a goal and led by 7 points with 5 minutes to go. The ‘Stars stuck to their task and thanks to two late goals from Martin Murphy and Cian Liddy and a point in between, Realt Dearg snatched the draw at the end. A poor performance from the Stars but a huge result on the day to maintain our unbeaten start. Realt Dearg Abú Team: Marc McLiam, Ultan, Trev, Mike Richardson, Aodán, JB, Chubba, Paul Warren, O’D, Simply the Hest, Kieran Kelly, Clare’s Martin Murphy, Joe O’Callaghan, Cian Liddy, Kilkennys Martin Murphy Wild Geese 0-07 Realt Dearg B 2-05 Oldtown, Sunday 29 March 2015 3pm Conditions were tough up in North County Dublin for this clash with a strong wind and a heavy pitch. Realt Dearg made a solid start with a few points and a well taken ground stroke goal from Stephen Roche. Barry Ruth scored a thumper of a pointed free from with his own half. The Stars started the second half in superb fashion. James Kenny collected a puck out, moved the ball on to Tom Kehoe who played a cross field ball into Stephen Roche who took the ball into contact. Drawing the defender he released a reverse hand pass to Stephen Casey who unleashed a shot from 20 meters to the far upper corner of the net. It was a thing of beauty. Casey claims it wasn’t his best goal but your humble narrator disagrees. Tom Kehoe scored the Stars last point and the lads survived a siege by the Wild Wild Geese for the last 10 minutes to hold out for a great 4 point win. Realt Dearg Abú. Realt Dearg V Park Ratheniska (Laois) Leinster Junior Hurling League. Saturday 7th March 2015 A late goal conceded in the dying minutes of this game put paid to the stars winning back to back Leinster league matches at Park Ratheniska last Saturday afternoon. A game played in tough conditions never really sparkled but instead trundled along at a steady pace. Park Ratheniska started the brightest but had a point disallowed after 3 minutes. This was followed by a well taken Kevin Ryan free after 5 minutes to put the away side in front. They attempted to extend this lead with a couple of long range efforts put despite the wind carrying the ball the accuracy was just not there. Cian Liddy then broke through the Park Ratheniska defence only to see his shot saved brilliantly by the home keeper. The Laois side finally got off the mark in the 11thminute with a free of their own. Realt Dearg responded with Kevin Ryan pointing another free as the foul count from both sides started to mount up. In fairness the conditions underfoot made things very difficult to play good hurling and the state of the pitch suited both defences. Having said that Realt Dearg were hurling with the wind at their backs and they were not imposing themselves as well as they would have liked. Park Ratheniska scored two points in quick succession with both scores coming from play before Liddy again broke through the Laois defence shooting low and hard but was denied a goal for the second time by a brilliant save from the goalie. Kieran Kelly slotted over a fine point two minutes later to leave the sides level. The home team responded well to this scare and were in control in the final stages of the half but with the wind playing a huge factor they finished the first 30 minutes with a couple of very bad wide’s including a miss from a 21 yard free and both sides went in at half time level at 0-3 apiece. Realt Dearg opened the second half with two bad wide’s before Park took the lead in the 35th minute making it 0-4 to 0-3.The introduction of John Tarpey into full forward had an immediate effect with his first two touches yielding two fantastic points either side of another Ratheniska pointed free. It was great to see Tarpey back in full flight after a long year out with injury. Both defences were still on top particularly both half back lines. Although the wind had died down a bit at this stage the low scoring was proof that the going was particular tough for forwards. Despite this both sides continued to plug away and it was shaping up to be an entertaining final quarter. Park Ratheniska struck again to make it 0-6 to 0-5 when their wing back ran a good 30 yards before scoring a wonderful point off his hurl. That was followed by Kevin Ryan getting his third point from placed balls in the 49th minute leaving it all square going in the final ten minutes. Both teams exchanged wides before the killer goal was scored in the 56th minute. Realt Dearg immediately went in search of an equalising goal and came close through efforts from Joe O Callaghan and the recently introduced Conor O’ Droma but it wasn’t to be. A final point in injury time from Park Ratheniska finished the Realt Dearg challenge and when the ref blew the final whistle they found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-7 to 0-6 score line. On a day and a pitch that wasn’t conducive to good hurling the Stars did put in some good performances. The full back line of Ronan Moloney, Colm Gahan and Mike Richardson were solid for the hour and gave nothing away easily. The half back line of Hurley, Barry and McKenna were clever in possession and excellent throughout. Both midfielders worked their socks off for the hour while up front on a tough day Kevin Ryan was solid in his free taking and Kieran Kelly, Martin Murphy (KK) and John Tarpey when introduced looked the most dangerous. Final score: Park Ratheniska 1-7 Realt Dearg 0-6 Team: Marc McLiam, Mike Richardson, Colm Gahan, Ronan Moloney Derek McKenna, John Barry, Aodhan Hurley, Eoin O Dwyer (Cpt), Brian Gavin Cian Liddy, Eoin Ryan, Kieran Kelly, Martin Murphy (KK) Joe O’Callaghan, Kevin Ryan. Realt Dearg V Ros Gals (Kildare) Leinster Junior Hurling League 28/02/2015 Realt Dearg got their season off to a winning start with a fine victory over Ros Glas of Kildare in the Junior Hurling League at a windswept Drimnagh Castle on Saturday afternoon. Playing with a strong breeze in the opening half the Kildare side settled into their task quickly tapping over a point in the 3rd minute to take an early lead. Realt Deag answered immediately with 2 points of their own from debutant Joe O Callaghan and a lovely strike from Kieran Kelly. The visitors responded with an equalizing score in the 10th minute and had chances to retake the lead but they missed a couple of very score able frees. Despite this Realt Dearg were starting to get a greater share of possession and the good home support settled in for what was turning out to be a cracking contest. A well taken point from converted wing back Cathal (Hesty) Hester in the 13th minute restored the home sides lead and this was the catalyst for a period of Realt Dearg dominance. Great work in the middle third of the field from Midfielder Paul Warren and Half backs McKenna and Gavin were squeezing the life out of the Kildare side’s attacks while Hester and Kieran Kelly were starting to win whatever ball came their way. Two goals in quick succession, one from the new kid Joe O Callaghan and another from Frank Farrell put the Stars in a commanding lead by the 20th minute mark. Farrell had a hand in the first goal when his pass across the square was met by the outstretched hurl of O'Callaghan .Joe had the longer reach beating his marker and calmly batted the sliothar past the helpless Kildare keeper. The second goal came from a long range shot from Farrell which beat the Ros Glas goalie from 40 yards. (Only Frank will know if he meant it). Either way the result was the same and a further point from a free by the inform full forward meant that Realt Dearg were now 7 points in front on a score line of 2-4 to 0-3. Ros Glas were not going to lie down easily and launched a comeback just before half time. A point followed quickly by a goal brought the home side within a score of the visitors. A long range free on the stroke of half time from Frank helped to settle the home crowds nerves and the sides went in at the break on a score of 2-5 to 1-4. Now playing with the wind at their backs Realt Dearg started the second half brightly and hit a bit of a purple scoring patch. Despite the extra attention he was now receiving from the Ros Glas backs Frank scored an outrageous point from a tight angle. He collected the ball close to the sideline 45 yards out and struck the ball over his shoulder and over the bar to extend the lead to 5 points. This was followed by a fantastic point from midfielder Eoin Ryan and a second score from the unmarkable Kieran Kelly making it 2-8 to 1-4 before Farrell scored his 4th point of the day and his 5th score in total making it 2-9 to 1-4. Ros Glas still had a lot of fight in them and clawed back a single point before forcing goalkeeper Marc McLiam into a truly brilliant save from a 21 yard free. The introduction of John Barry and Tom Kehoe steadied the ship and when Hesty unexpectedly popped up on the 50 yard line to take over free taking duties he made it 2-10 to 1-5. Joe O Callaghan then added a brace to put further daylight between the sides and the Kildare outfit seemed to run out of steam. To cap off a fine performance Frank added his second and Realt Dearg’s third goal with less than 10 minutes to go. He again collected the ball wide on the wing, turned his man and headed for goal. He beat a second defender before unleashing a ferocious shot into the net almost decapitating the goalkeeper in the process. Ros Glas kept plugging away and finished the scoring for the day with a point from a free in injury time leaving the final score Realt Dearg 3-12 Ros Glas 1-6. On a day where the club recorded their first win in Leinster there was some excellent performances throughout the field. Goalkeeper Marc McLiam had a very solid game and pulled off a great save in the second half. The full back line led by captain Trevor Jackman with Ultan Dillon and Mike Richardson gave little away. The half back line was dominate for long periods with Chubba and Derek McKenna doing especially well. Colm Gahan had a steady debut at centre back while the pairing of Paul Warren and Eoin Ryan in midfield held sway over their opposite numbers. The half forward line of Cathal Hester Stephen Barry and Kieran Kelly worked tirelessly throughout the hour winning countless ball while the full forward line of Kevin Ryan, Frank Farrell and Joe O' Callaghan caused the Kildare side huge problems. Farrell and Callaghan finished the day contributing a total of 3-7 out of 3-12 of their team’s scores. Subs John Barry, Tom Kehoe, Brad Harte, Jack McNamara and Shane Lenehan all played their part in a fine win. Team Marc McLiam,Ultan Dillon,Trevor Jackman, Mike Richardson, Derek McKenna,Colm Gahan,Brian Gavin,Paul Warren,Eoin Ryan, Cathal Hester,Stephen Barry,Kieran Kelly,Kevin Ryan, Frank Farrell,Joe O'Callaghan.
