Réalt Dearg 2-9; Clanna Gael 1-17
AHL8 Final -Replay (After Extra Time)
Réalt Dearg ended the season without silverware in an enthralling game played on the astro pitch in Thomas Davis GAA. In the end, Clanna Gael had to pull out all the stops, introducing some of their better players into the game to try and wrench the title from the Stars' grasp.
In the final moments, Réalt Dearg were leading by a single point but Clanna Gael snatched a draw at the death to put the game into extra time. The Ringsend side finished 60 minutes with 3 players sent off and a few more cautions given also. Dearg had just the single yellow card issued by the referee who handled the game well despite hostility throughout from the away support. Extra-time however now meant Clanna Gael could play with the full 15 and they took advantage of their larger squad to win the final by 5 points.
A poor performance overall to end the season for Réalt Dearg but, despite no silverware, it was still a hugely successful year for the Stars. A County semi final and League final replay appearance for the A team and a County Quarter-Final appearance for the B team has laid a foundation for the club going into next year.

League Final Goes to a Replay

Clanna Gael 3-9; Réalt Dearg 3-9
AHL8 Final
The League Final ended in a draw on Sunday last, much to the relief of the home side from Ringsend as they played second fiddle for most of the game to a determined Réalt Dearg side. Dearg were missing a few key players for the game but the players that came in were every bit as good on the day.
Clan na Gael were frustrated throughout the game as they had most likely expected an easy encounter judged by the previous meeting between the sides. Réalt Dearg were going through a huge injury crisis back in May though and actually had to play acouple of injured players that day to make up the numbers. There was no such making up the numbers on Sunday though and but for a couple of baffling decisions at the end from the official, Dearg would have walked away with the silverware.
Credit has to go to Clan na Gael too, as they found themselves 4 points in arrears with just a few minutes to go. They capitalised on the official's decisions to score 1-1 as time ran out. The final whistle was met with a huge cheer from the Ringend contingent and a determined steel from Réalt Dearg that the next day, the effort will be far greater.
G. Thompson, R. Moloney, T. Jackman, B. Harte, E. O'Dwyer, D. Crowley, E. Fitz, J. Gallagher, P. Dileen, E. Carroll, D. O'Sullivan, S. Tuohy. C. Mulkere, R. Ryan, J. McNamara.

Stars Hoping for First Piece of Silverware

Clan na Gael v Réalt Dearg
AHL8 Final
Réalt Dearg have the chance to make up for their recent championship disappointment this Sunday as they take on Clan na Gael Fontenoy in the League final at Seán Moore Park.
The sides met in the group stages back in May and Clan na Gael won easily on a scoreline of 4-18 to 1-8. Réalt Dearg only had the bare bones of a team on the day and were forced to play a number of injured players to make up the first fifteen. Clan na Gael duly capitalised on that weakness and even though they had a man sent off just before half time, it was a comfortable evening for the Ringsend side.
Dearg will be missing a few players for Sunday, Hesty, Mike Butler, Liam Breen and Eugene Kenny have all ruled themselves out but there are a number of players that can step in to their place on the day and will fight just as hard to obtain the club’s first piece of silverware.
We would greatly appreciate all support or help on the day.
It would cap off a great year for the club, a very busy one both on and off the field. Many thanks to all who helped out during the season and we look forward to our third spell in Dublin hurling next year.

Dearg Fall at Semi-Final Stage

Réalt Dearg 'A' 1-13; Kilmacud Crokes 3-11
Sunday 9th October, 2011
Réalt Dearg played in their second successive championship semi-final on Sunday October 9th, against Kilmacud Crokes in what was an enthralling encounter that had everything and needed to go to extra time to separate the two teams. It was played in front of a very decent home support turnout in what was great conditions for the match.
The opening exchanges saw Kilmacud open the scoring after 2 minutes with a point from a free which was swiftly followed by a similar score for the 'Stars’, pointed by Denis O’ Sullivan. The game was scoreless for the next 10 minutes as each side tested one another to find an opening. Richie Ryan got the game’s first score from play after a flowing move the length of the field. Kilmacud hit back with a goal which was quickly followed by a pointed free from Denis again.
Again this next portion of the match, although scoreless, was entertaining and gripping with the 'Stars’ players showing great commitment, effort and skill. Towards the end of the half both sides traded scores with Mike Butler getting three pointed frees which Kilmacud replied to getting one point from play and a free. Liam Breen then finished off a run from deep which saw Réalt Dearg head into the break a point ahead with the aid of a mild breeze 0-07 to Kilmacud’s 1-03.
Kilmacud burst out of the traps with an early goal after just 2 minutes of play resuming. The 'Stars’ didn’t let the heads drop and replied with 2 scores, a pointed free from Mike and one from play by Richie to make it a level game. Kilmacud responded again with 2 points from play either side of a fine point from play by Shane Tuohy in what was really end to end stuff. Kilmacud got another point from play to push the gap to 2 points but they were no way in the clear with constant pressure from the 'Stars’.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes it really started to heat up. Mike scored a free to cut the deficit back to a point. This was swiftly followed by 2 pointed frees from Kilmacud to leave a goal as the difference heading into the closing stages. The play was all coming from Réalt Dearg and after some great work by Denis he flicked it on to Mike who volleyed it into the net for a great goal which really lifted the crowd and the team. Réalt Dearg pushed on again and Mike was extremely unlucky not to add a second goal with a screamer of a shot that came off the crossbar that hit so hard it only landed about 20 yards out when it eventually fell to the ground. Momentum was really with the 'Stars’ but unfortunately not time as the ref blew up for a drawn game – 1-11 to 2-08. We would now have extra time to see who would come out on top.
Both teams regrouped and kept the intensity once the first half of 10 minutes of extra time began. Réalt Dearg edged ahead with 2 points from Denis, one a free and one from play. Kilmacud replied with a pointed free to leave the half time score of extra time 2 points to 1 in favor of Réalt Dearg. The scoreline now read 1-13 to 2-09.
The second half began with Kilmacud scoring a point from a free. They added another point and then a goal in what became an increasingly punctuated game due to the high number of stoppages. The closing stages of the match saw a Kilmacud player sent off and a penalty saved by the Kilmacud keeper. A disappointing end to a day that had lots of positives for the club.
Thanks to everyone that came along to support the team on the day and best of luck to Kilmacud in the final. Réalt Dearg’s next game will be the League final, Sunday 30th October in Seán Moore Park against Clan na Gael.
Team: Gary Thompson, Cathal Hester, Eugene Kenny, Brad Harte, Eoin O’Dwyer, Darragh Crowley, Eoin Fitzpatrick, Peter Dilleen, Shane Tuohy, Eoghan Carroll, Liam Breen, Denis O’Sullivan, Cathal Mulkere, Mike Butler, Richie Ryan

Réalt Dearg Look to Continue Extraordinary Story

Sunday next, October 9th, sees Réalt Dearg play in a championship semi-final for the second successive season, a remarkable achievement considering the club’s two year existence.
Whilst the ‘B’ team showed considerable character and determination in their first attempt at Junior F championship this year, eventually losing out to favourites St Mark’s in the quarters, it was the Realt Dearg ‘A’ that were setting the tongues wagging in the Dublin Hurling club scene.
Each opponent was swatted aside in the group stages as Réalt Dearg finished top and found themselves pitted against Erin Go Bragh in the quarters. A 21 point win saw the ‘Stars’ ease through to the tough end of the championship and will now meet one of the biggest Clubs in Ireland, Kilmacud Crokes, in the semi-final this Sunday in Thomas Davis GAA grounds at 3pm.
Both sides met in the league with Réalt Dearg coming away with the spoils on that occasion on a scoreline of 3-17 to 0-8 but that will all be forgotten about this weekend as Crokes have progressed since then as some of their championship games have shown.
Réalt Dearg started back training in mid January and have racked up over 60 sessions to date, not including games themselves. The fact that Réalt Dearg ‘A’ have gotten this far without a manager is astounding, though the training during Summer by Offaly man, Gary Kelly was top notch and much of the reason why both teams have been successful to date. The A’s also had to work through the year with the bare bones of a squad due to long term injuries to players like Trevor Jackman, Keith Lawler, Morgan Gleeson and Tom Doyle. In recent weeks a lot of the B team players have been pushing hard to make the A team and the 26 man squad itself.
Support for the team would be greatly appreciated on Sunday as the Red Star look to continue their extraordinary story.

Réalt Dearg Through to Semi-Final
Réalt Dearg 'A' 6-14 Erin Go Bragh 1-8
September 11, 2011
Réalt Dearg 'A' v Erin go Bragh quarter final took place in the Thomas Davis grounds on Sunday 11th at 3pm. Stars had topped their group section so had a home tie against the 4th place team from the other section of the Junior E championship. Stars started with the strong wind and raced into an early lead with first half goals from Dinny Sullivan, a deflected Eoghan Carroll shot and one from Jack plus good points from Liam Breen, Dinny plus an over head effort from Ritchie Ryan.
At half time Stars had a healthy lead of 3-8 to 1-4 but had to play into a gael force wind for the second half. Stars had to replace influential defender Peter Dilleen at the break due to a hamstring injury. Mailman came on and had a storming second half with some Hollywood clearances. Full forward Mike Butler was also replaced minutes into the second half also with an injury. This led to the introduction of Keith Lawler who himself was just returning from a long term injury, scoring 2 points in the process. Stars started the second half like they had the first with quick goals from Ritchie Ryan, Jack and Liam securing the victory. Stars were also to have a couple of other scores disallowed for square balls. All in all it was a great team performance, outscoring the opposition by 11 points in the second half despite the storm force wind. We now look forward to a home semi final in the next 3-4 weeks.
Réalt Dearg team: Gary Thompson, Barry Ruth, Cathal Hester, Eoin Fitz, Peter Dilleen, Darragh Crowley, Eoin O'Dwyer, James Gallagher, Shane Tuohy 0-1, Eoghan Carroll 1-1, Liam Breen 1-2, Dinny Sullivan 1-5, Jack McNamara 2-0, Mike Butler 0-2, Ritchie Ryan 1-1. Réalt Dearg GAA club would like to wish Ross Kelly a speedy recovery from a bad injury picked up in the B Team quarter final and hope to see him, his new metal hand and ashguard back in the Red Star jersey as soon as possible.

County Quarter-Final Time for 'A' and 'B' Réalt Dearg teams

This Sunday, September 11, sees both Réalt Dearg teams in Quarter-Final action. The Réalt Dearg 'A' are home (Thomas Davis Grounds) against Erin Go Bragh while the B team are away to Tallaght side, St Mark's.
Both teams have been training hard since mid-January and have reaped the rewards in qualifying for the knockout stages. Réalt Dearg 'A' had just one team last year and reached the County Semi-Final before losing out to eventual winners. Castleknock. They will hope to reach that stage again this year and possibly go one better. They are, however, without the services of full back rock, Eugene Kenny and the ever dependable Brad Harte but should have able deputies to step in in their absence.
The B team have reached the Quarters in their first year in existence and will have a tough outing against St Mark's. One thing is for sure, Mark's will know they're in a game on Sunday and come the final whistle we hope to see the Red Star come out on top.

Réalt Dearg are holding a 'Last Man Standing' competition now that the Premier League is getting underway.
€20 Euro entry.
Rules are as follows -
1 It’s simple, just pick the winner of one Premier League match each week. If your selection wins you progress to the next week, lose or draw and you’re out!
2 Once your selection is made you do not have the ability to change it.
3 You may not pick the same team to win more than once during the tournament (unless the competition progresses past 20 weeks).
4 All selections must be received no later than Friday 12 noon for weekend round of fixtures. For midweek rounds where the first game kicks off at 7.45pm all selections must be made by 12 noon on day of first game in that round.
5 Should you forget to make your selection or are not contactable in any week, you will automatically be assigned the first team you have not selected in alphabetical order. Once this is done you do not have the ability to change the selection.
6 In the event that any match involving team you have selected is cancelled or postponed for any reason, you will continue to the next round. However, the team will no longer be available for selection.
7 Should two or more participants remain standing and all are eliminated in the same week the Last Man Standing prize will be shared equally among them.
8 Rounds of fixtures may take place at weekends or midweek, depending on available fixtures. Realt Dearg will decide which fixtures are included for each round.
9 In the unlikely event that the tournament has not reached a conclusion by the end of 2011/12 season, remaining participants will have a choice of (A) Splitting prize fund equally (B) Roll over to the start of next season in August. This will be decided on a vote between remaining participants-Majority verdict.

Historic Win Sees Réalt Dearg 'B' Qualify for Quarter-Final

Réalt Dearg 'B' 2-12; Clontarf 1-09
July 19th, 2011
The smell of cut grass, flies biting the sh*te out of you, and an ice cream van playing the 'Match of the Day' tune (which almost sounded like the Sunday game theme) – thats right, its championship time, Tallaghtfornia style.
Réalt Dearg ‘B’ recorded their second championship win of the season in a high scoring, entertaining match played in great conditions against Clontarf.
The Stars were rearing to go and hit the ground running, after the delayed throw in. Cathal Mulkere opened the Stars account with a nice finish after some positive approach play after 3 minutes. This was immediately followed up by another score from play from “Miller” Conlon in what was a sign of things to come. Mulkere pointed again from a free before Clontarf were awarded a penalty which they pointed from. Réalt Dearg replied straight away through another Mulkere point, which was quickly answered by 2 points from Clontarf in what was a frantic end-to-end game up to this point.
The game settled down after the opening period and was competitive all over the park. Against the run of play Clontarf were awarded a second penalty in what was a “not that kind of game” tussle. But justice was served when Clontarf badly pulled the resulting puck wide of the left hand post. The Star’s closed out the half with another fine score from play from Mulkere and a well taken 65 from Smiley. There was a goal chance for the Star’s just before halftime which had the partisan crowd in raptures but thanks to some hawk eye technology and admirable impartiality from your humble correspondent, it was ruled as having hit the side netting. No fault. The Stars’ headed in at half time 5 points to Clontarfs 3 points.
Réalt Dearg started the second half in similar fashion to the first with a point from a free from Mulkere. Then in a standout moment, “Miller” Conlon lived up to his namesake's brand motto in goaling after a neat collection and straight run on goal – he definitely didn’t miss that genuine opportunity. Coincidently he has been known to go out for a night and end up in Ibiza the next day! This was followed by three points from play from Eoin Morrissey, Mulkere and a sweet strike from out on the wing from Ross Comerford. Clontarf seemed shell-shocked but in fairness to them they came back with a goal and 2 points to bring the gap back to 4 points.
The last 10 minutes of the game really was a joy to watch in what was end-to-end good competitive hurling, with every score being matched by the opposition. The difference was that ”Miller” was in ice cold mood and finished a second goal to the back of the net. Cathal Mulkere capped a fine performance with 2 more points and Smiley pointed another 65, (or a forfeit point as we recently learned in the Réált Dearg Quiz!!), to see the match end Réalt Dearg ‘B’ 2-12; Clontarf 1-09. In what was a great night for the club with the A’s also winning their match comfortably against Civil Service, I’ll leave the last word to The Don, chairman Jack McNamara “Some great work has gone in both on and off the field to get 2 teams going this year and it was a great achievement for a club less than 18 months old in 2 county quarter finals and the A team playing in a league semi final”

Undefeated Stars Through to Quarter-Final

Réalt Dearg 'A' 9-9; Civil Service 0-9
July 19th, 2011
Réalt Dearg banged in the goals again in big style in their final Group game of the Championship at home to Civil Service. A great performance on the night saw them finish ahead by 27 points on a scoreline of 9-9 to 0-9.
Réalt Dearg now go through to the County Quarter-Final and will get a favourable draw after topping the group.
Liam Breen and Eoghan Carroll got game time on the night after a long lay off from injury-good to see the lads back.
Riche Ryan, who is not long back from injury himself, amassed a total of 4-2 and laid off a couple of “Joe Canning” style hand passes to set up others around him. Stars ran riot in the first half to lead by 6-6 to 0-3 at half time.
Gary Thomspon had an impressive night between the posts, keeping a much needed clean sheet. A top class save from the Clareman in the second half was the pick of the action.
A fantastic night for the club in only our second year in existence, topping the group undefeated. Let’s hope we can keep that record up for 3 more championship games!

Quiz and Auction a Huge Success

Master of Ceremonies, Cathal Hester (left). Correctors on the night, Trevor Jackman and Cian O'Brien (right)
The Réalt Dearg GAA Club held a hugely successful ‘No Phones Table Quiz’ in the Barge pub on Thursday, 14th July. A massive crowd turned out for the night, so many, that a few trips had to be made to the local shops to buy extra boxes of pens and to photocopy additional answer sheets. It required Trevor Jackman to go on his first bit of running in months and he held up well by all accounts.
Cathal Hester was MC on the night and did a superb job. He made sure the audience were entertained and that each team had their mobile phones packed away in the zip-lock bags provided on the night as it was, after all, a No Phones quiz. At Réalt Dearg we take our rules seriously so snitching was very much encouraged.
After 99 great questions and 1 very dubious one (Forfeit point in hurling? There’s no 65s given anymore-it’s a throw-in on the 21 Wazu!!!), team “Quiz101” were the outright winners and walked away with a €100 voucher for Vaughan’s in Terenure and €100 cash. There was also a very successful Raffle held at the halway point where the Club gave away about 30 spot prizes. Thanks to everyone who donated prizes.
Then, it was time.
What every lady in Dublin was waiting for. They didn’t want no questions. None of the raffle prizes were good enough for them. They didn’t care that they were there for a great cause on the night. They wanted raw, strong, atlethic, warrior-like specimens to be put up for the Man Auction. Unfortunatley we had no one like that in the Club so they just had to make do with Richie Ryan, Ronan Moloney, Cian O’Brien and Gavin Deacon.
It was ‘Beatle Mania’ all over again as the women fell over themselves trying to get a gawk at the men up on stage and part with their hard earned cash for a Date Night. Some thought it frankly disgusting for it was as if the men were just ‘a piece of meat’. Men have feelings too ladies.
Richie will bring a bag a cans on his date, Mailman will simply deliver, Cian will pick his date up in a tractor and Deacon will help with the washing up, painting the shed, hoovering...whatever the Lanigans want really.
A big thanks to everyone that took part. It all helped to raise money to help keep the Réalt Dearg club going. Huge thanks to the fundraising committee-Cian O’Brien, Cathal Hester, Trevor Jackman et al for setting up what was a fantastic night.
On now to what we do best.
Championship.

Réalt Dearg's Goose Cooked

Réalt Dearg 'B' 0-10; Wild Geese 1-13
July 8th, 2011
Réalt Dearg played their 2nd league game in 4 days which unfortunately ended in a 6 point defeat in what was an entertaining and fast flowing game in Thomas Davis grounds in Tallaght last Friday night.
Réalt Dearg were quick out of the traps and were first on the scoreboard with a well taken score from play from John Moher who announced the birth of his first child this week. He duly celebrated with the samba styled baby rocking motion which had the crowd enthralled. Wild Geese replied straight away with a point of their own before Moher pointed again which was also equalled by Wild Geese.
Wild Geese added a further point and a crucial goal. The Stars duly responded with David Ridge scoring his first league point and not to be outdone in the duck breaking ceremonies, Ger Kennedy also scored his first point from play with a nice turn and shot. John Moher added 2 further points and variations on the “baby in the cradle” celebrations before Wild Geese replied with 3 points to close out the half leaving it Réalt Dearg 'B' 0-06 to 1-06 for Wild Geese.
The second half started at a lively pace again and saw both sides score 3 points each, with all 3 scores coming from John Moher for the Stars. It was really setting up for a cracking finale as Réalt Dearg went in search of the goal that divided the teams. They applied the pressure well but Wild Geese were able to clear their lines each time and managed to go up the field for another score to keep the Stars at arms length.
In the end the goal never came for the Stars. James Doyle made it a duck breaking hat-trick of new scorers with a point near the end that saw the game finish 10 points for Réalt Dearg, 1-13 to Wild Geese. A disappointing defeat but a good performance against a good team.
Réalt Dearg wishes to congratulate John Moher and his wife Marie Louise on the birth of their daughter Olivia – possibly a future star of the Réalt Dearg Camogie team!

Poor Performance Sees Dearg Second Best

Whitehall Colmcille 0-10; Réalt Dearg 'B' 1-03
July 5th, 2011
Réalt Dearg fell to a disappointing four point defeat to Whithall Colmcilles in what was a perfect evening for hurling in Cloghran.
Réalt Dearg started the game well, applying pressure all over the pitch which was rewarded with 2 points from Wazu, one from play from a nice turn on the run and the second a pointed free. Colmcilles replied immediately to the Stars second point with a point of their own. The next 10 minutes saw misses from both sides but some good fielding and ground hurling from the Stars keeper which would be a tribute to a recently departed (not dead) coach, Gary Kelly, though maybe the Donal Óg style short puck outs were a tad too flashy.
Colmcilles came more into the game as the half progressed aided by a reasonably strong wind scoring six further points without reply to leave the half time score Colmcille’s 0-07 to Réalt Dearg’s 0-02.
The stars shuffled the pack at half time with the keeper coming out the field in at half forward and Wazu taking over in goal. I’m no doctor but I sensed Wazu may have picked up an injury. Colmcilles opened the scoring in the second half with a point which was replied to by a point from the recently converted goalkeeper to half forward. Colmcilles answered with another point before the Stars hit a few wides which were close. The Stars had a great goal chance soon after but unfortunately the ball just got caught up under feet and when the clean strike was applied, it trickled just wide.
Eoin Morrissey made amends with a well taken goal midway through the second half which left only a goal in it. The Stars put in some hard work all over the pitch but unfortunately weren’t able to add to the score. Honourable mention goes to James Doyle in his debut goalkeeping appearance for a few fine saves towards the end that kept Réalt Dearg in the game. In the end a pointed free from Comcilles was the last score in what was an entertaining and well refereed game. Next up Wild Geese on Friday. Lets hope the crowds flock to that one.....

Dearg Overcome Adversity to Register Historic Win

St Joseph's OCB 0-10; Réalt Dearg 'B' 2-6
June 29th, 2011
Réalt Dearg recorded their first league win in a very competitive encounter against St Josephs OCB in Fairview Park.
Réalt Dearg began the match very lively and had an early goal chance just go wide after some good approach play. St Josephs opened the scoring with a free which was a sign of things to come for the rest of the game. In what was a lively game and good conditions for hurling the game was never really allowed to flow and saw St Joseph’s rattle up 8 scores, all from frees. Réalt Dearg got a second pointed free and a sweetly taken goal from Eoin Morrissey to leave the half time score St Joseph’s 0-08 to 1-02 for Réalt Dearg.
Réalt Dearg regrouped at halftime and started strongly in the second half. St Joseph’s were awarded 2 more frees to take their tally up to 10 points. The next 10 or so minutes saw the game turn into a real battle.
Réalt Dearg dug deep then and really started to put pressure on the ball all over the pitch. The persistence was rewarded with 2 well taken frees from Wazu. St Joseph’s were under the cosh and the pressure was beginning to tell. The blood was up and adrenaline flowing so much so after a run from deep from Danger it was rumoured he needed Sat Nav to get back into position he was so far forward! The game was played a full pace at this stage and the Stars were duly rewarded with a lovely over headed flick of the ball into the goal by Michael Butler that Federer would be proud of.
The Stars could sense a win and pushed on again and were rewarded with two further frees which were coolly converted by Wazu which turned out to be the winning margin. A great team effort that great showed character and belief to overcome the obstacles and hang on in there to come out right in the end. Realt Dearg Abú.

Farewell to Trainer Gary Kelly

Player Rep, Trevor Jackman, right, hands Gary Kelly a Réalt Dearg jersey as a thanks for his time training the club
Thursday 30th of June was to be the last Réalt Dearg training session undertaken by Offaly man, Gary Kelly. In only our second year in existence as a club, we were finding it hard to find a manager or a trainer to take on the role of whipping over 30 odd lads into shape until, in late March Gary answered the call after reading about us on the internet.
Countless hills, laps, sprints, drills and hand holding (don’t ask) later, both Réalt Dearg teams found themselves among the fittest teams around.
Often times this year, we have found ourselves coming out even stronger in the second half of games and seeing it out to the very end. All credit for this must go to the Lusmagh native and the club are sad to see him go. We all wish Gary well as he takes up his new role in London. The next team that find themselves under his guidance will be a lucky and fit one.
To all the women out there, it just shows you really can find the right man on the internet!
Réalt Dearg Remain Undefeated in Championship

Réalt Dearg 'A' 5-17; Craobh Chiaráin 3-5
June 12th, 2011
First and second played each other on a wet, miserable Sunday afternoon on the all-weather pitch in Thomas Davis GAA. The sides were seperated by a large points difference in the Group table going into the game and ended up with a considerable points difference seperating them on the pitch also.
With the 18 point winning margin, Réalt Dearg are now virtually guaranteed the top spot going into the County Quarter-Finals. Shoulders to the wheel now for all involved in only the Stars second season in existence.
The game was even enough for the first 5-10 minutes but eventually Réalt Dearg got a foothold. Inspirational captain, Denis O’Sullivan led the way with the scoring amassing 2-6 for his side with Shane Tuohy doing damage from the wing with a personal tally of 2-3. Liam Breen wreaked havoc at centre forward despite concern over a broken finger mid-way through the first half. Peter Dileen and the hard-working James Gallagher got through oceans of ball at midfield and kept the supply lines flowing into Mike Butler and Richie Ryan. Jack McNamara’s sideline balls on the astro turf were worth the admission price alone.
At the back, each man held their own and limited the Craobh Ciaráin side to a paltry 8 scores on the day. Fitzy and Sharkey were never in trouble and after a slow start, O’Dwyer, Mailman, Ruth and Hesty all kept their house intact.
The second half surge is becoming synonymous with this Réált Dearg side of late. Leading by 9 at half time, they battled away to the very end eventually winning by 5-17 to 3-5.
Onwards and upwards.

Disappointing Low Scoring Encounter Sees St Pat's Win

Réalt Dearg 'B' 2-02; St Patrick’s Donabate 2-07
June 12th, 2011
Réalt Dearg faced St Pat’s, Donabate in the championship in what was a rematch of their recent league encounter which was played on a wet and miserable Sunday afternoon in Thomas Davis pitch in Tallaght. This game turned out to be a very low scoring and disappointing encounter.
The game got off to a flying start with goals for both sides being the opening scores with Wazu applying the finishing touch for the Stars. St Pat’s saw out the half with a goal and 4 points with Cathal Mulkere and Wazu pointing one each to leave the scores 1-02 to 2-04 at half time.
The second half saw a period of sustained pressure but which unfortunately didn’t lead to any scores for Réalt Dearg. St Pat’s tipped away with 2 points but were by no means out of sight at any point. Unfortunately the Stars were unable to capitalise. Ross Comerford scored Réalt Dearg’s solitary score of the half with a well taken goal.
Disappointing result but still a chance for the ‘B’s to claim a quarter-final spot in the championship.

Stars Put Peregrine's To The Sword

St Peregrine's 2-4; Réalt Dearg 'A' 8-18
June 7th, 2011
Réalt Dearg ‘A’ had their second championship outing on Tuesday, June 7th, played in Blakestown and came away with an emphatic 32 point victory. St Peregrine’s were put to the sword this time in a game that was realistically over after 15 minutes.
Dearg started brightly and attacked Peregrine’s goal continuously, notching up some great scores including a spectacular flicked goal by Shane Tuohy from a diagonal high ball in from Peter Dileen.
Mike Butler and Dinny were causing trouble inside for the Peregrine’s defence as Liam Breen and Finnian Dawson were proving a nuisance further out the field.
James Gallageher worked through an amount of ball in midfield with the defence behind him solid throughout. Fitzy, Eoin O’Dwyer and Brad Harte kept the supply lines going for the duration of the game.
4-11 to 1-2 up at half-time, a couple of enforced substitutions in the second half, Ronan Moloney for Dinny (ankle) and Barry Ruth for Eoin Fitz (thumb) didn’t slow down Dearg’s momentum as they ran out easy 8-18 to 2-4 winners.
Réalt Dearg top the group heading into a tricky weekend encounter with Craobh Chiaráin. A win sees the Stars in a good position for the next round of the championship.
Team was - G. Thompson, C. Hester, E. Kenny, B. Harte, E. O'Dwyer, D. Crowley, E. Fitz, F. Dawson (0-4), J. Gallagher, S. Tuohy (1-2), L. Breen (3-3), P. Dileen (0-1), J. McNamara (0-1), M. Butler (3-4), D. O'Sullivan (1-2).

Monica's Too Strong for Stars
St Monica’s 4-15; Réalt Dearg 'B' 3-05
June 7th, 2011
Realt Dearg 'B' faced table toppers St Monica’s in round 3 of the championship in perfect conditions on Tuesday night which saw St Monica’s win comfortably in the end in what was, for long parts, a very competitive game in which, Monica’s, although were the superior team, did benefit from a few breaks which helped the cause.
The game got off to a blistering start with a goal from St Monica’s which was quickly replied to with a point from the Stars’ Conor O’Droma. St Monica’s tagged on a fortunate goal and 3 further points which, in the blistering opening, made it St Monica’s 2-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes.
Both sides traded points midway through the half with a pointed free from Smiley and a sliced kick shot off the right boot of Terry Cunningham. This man does not do things the normal way and his flamboyant taking of points from all angles and methods is becoming a talking point of the club – after his iron shot last week the fade on this gem would stop Tiger in his tracks!
St Monica’s finished the half strongly adding a further goal and 4 points to go in leading 3-09 to Réalt Dearg’s 1- 03.
Réalt Dearg regrouped at half time and came out with a blistering start which saw them start the half with a point apiece from O’Droma and Cathal Mulkere which was followed up soon after by a goal from Gizzy. St Monica’s were rattled and duly emptied the bench to bring on fresh legs. The Stars’ kept the pressure on after which led to Gizzy’s impression of an upturned turtle in a goalmouth scramble which led to a 21 yard free for the Stars and a yellow card for the Monica’s full back for a wild and reckless pull on the turtle!
The resulting free was cleared off the line after a fine effort from Cathal Mulkere and although he got a well taken goal later in the half Monica’s did enough to see out the half and maintain their 100% record. The Stars for their part have another game this coming weekend to make amends and build on, what at times was, a very spirited performance.
The upcoming match against St Pats has yet to be confirmed. Check your local press or in the fixtures bar of this website for details.

A Hurling Legend Trains the Dearg
On Thursday, June 1st, Réalt Dearg had a special guest training the teams for the evening. Two time All-Star and All-Ireland winner, Wexford’s George O’Connor put the Dearg through their paces at Bushy Park in Terenure.
For well over an hour, George seemed to cover all the skill bases; hooking, striking, passing, shooting. His enthusiasm and passion for the game is infectious and inspiring to all. The session will prove to be of great benefit to the players in the upcoming championship games.
The Réalt Dearg club wish to thank George O’Connor for his time and valued expertise and hope to meet again in the future.

Predict The Score Competition
Congratulations to James Butler on winning our first 'Predict the Score' competition. It proved to be very popular and James was the only person to guess the correct score between Dublin and Offaly in the Leinster Hurling Championship with the Metropolitans winning by 2-21 to 1-20. He walks away €300 the richer. We will be holding more 'Predict the Score' competitions so watch this space.
Dearg Make Short Work of Castleknock

Réalt Dearg ‘A’ 6-6 Castleknock 2-8
29th May, 2011
Réalt Dearg ‘A’ team maintained their undefeated home record by beating last year’s Junior F County Champions, Castleknock by 10 points in a windswept Ringsend Park. Castleknock came into the game unbeaten in the league and were looked on as favourites having comfortably seen off Réalt Dearg’s challenge in their last three meetings.
Dearg got off to a flyer scoring 3 goals on the bounce without reply (including 2 from recently returned Richie Ryan) before Castleknock eventually notched their first score from a free. Further frees helped the northside team to claw their way into the game but Réalt Dearg, with the aid of the robust breeze went into half time with a strong lead. However, each time these sides have met outside the championship, Dearg held the upper hand at the break only to see it squandered in the second half. Knowing that, ‘Stars’ came out even more determined in this game.
Castleknock now had the elements on their side and added further scores including a much need goal. Réalt Dearg were not to be undone this time and a superb second half performance was capped off with goals from Butler and substitute Mulkere to see them run out 10 point winners.
Team on the day was - G. Thompson, B. Harte, E. Fitz, R. Moloney, D. Crowley, B. Ruth, L. Breen, J. Gallagher, M. Butler (2-1), S. Tuohy (0-1), J. McNamara (0-2), D. O’Sullivan (1-2 (0-1f), R.Ryan (2-0).
Subs - C. Mulkere (1-0) for R. Ryan.

Donabate Just Edge Dearg

St Patrick's Donabate 1-10; Réalt Dearg ‘B’ 1-7
29th May, 2011
An early throw-in in North county Dublin served up an entertaining and competitive game which saw St Pats of Donabate edge out the encounter 1-10 to Réalt Dearg’s 1-7.
A busy week which the saw the Stars play their second game in four days determined to make up for the mid week disappointment. St Pats won the toss to play with the strong wind in the first half. In a competitive opening period St Pats opened their account with a disputed point. They tagged on a second from play either side of two wides before Réalt Dearg registered their first point with a well taken free from Smiley. The wind was proving a major factor in aiding Pats’ domination of territory and they duly converted with 6 points throughout the half. Réalt Dearg replied with scores from David Ridge and Smiley before Pats scored a goal and a point to end the half strongly on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-3.
Réalt Dearg came out determined in the second half and duly got the scoring underway when Terry Cunningham scooped up the ball over the bar in a ground stroke that Rory McIroy would stand back and admire. The Stars followed it up with another quick score from Smiley before Wazu stepped up to smash home a 21 yard free to the back of the net. The momentum was with the Stars now but Pats still managed to break up the field to tag on two scores to give them some breathing space.
Réalt Dearg came storming back again with 3 points from Wazu which made it a two point game. The Stars went for the jugular and after a great goal chance was cleared off the line they broke up the field to get their and what proved to be the last score of the game courtesy of a player called Giggsy which I presume there isn’t a super injunction from mentioning him?
A much improved performance from the Stars but a strong sense of disappointment from a game which was there for the taking. Some more tough training sessions and a master class from George O’Connor coming up to fine tune the team for the upcoming championship games coming up Tuesday 7th against St Monica’s and a
rematch with St. Pats on a date to be confirmed.

Injury Hit Réalt Dearg Side Taken Down

Clanna Gael Fontenoy 4-18; Réált Dearg 'A' 1-8
May 26, 2011
A combination of injuries to Réalt Dearg and the home side’s decision to play some of their more experienced players construed to make it a difficult evening for the Terenure side in the League game played in Seán Moore Park.
A strong wind blew in Réalt Dearg’s favour in the first half but they still went in 1-10 to 0-4 down at half time. Bad luck struck just before half time too as yet another injury was notched up with Eoghan Carroll going off with a hamstring pull, replaced by Mulkere who is just back from injury himself.
Clanna Gael were reduced to 14 men just before the break due to an off the ball incident which looked to give Réalt Dearg a chance of making a comeback in the second half. There seemed to be some glimmer of hope for the ‘Stars’ when Mike Butler grabbed a goal a few minutes into the second half but unfortunately, the strong breeze was now in the home side’s favour and they began to pull away and eventually ran out comfortable winners.
The odds were against Réalt Dearg due to the number of injuries in the club but they will get a swift chance of redemption when they play the next round of the League this Sunday against Castleknock.
Team was – G Thompson, B Ruth, E Kenny, J Gallagher, Mailman Moloney, Sharkey Crowley, OD, L Breen, S Tuohy, E Carroll, Dinny, M Butler, P Dileen, Trev Jackman (0-1 unrayl point), J McNamara.
Subs- C Mulkere (for E Carroll), Hesty.

B Team Undone By Plunkett's

St Oliver Plunkett's Eoghain Rua 1-10; Réalt Dearg 'B' 0-3
May 26, 2011
Réalt Dearg 'B' played in very blustery conditions on Thursday night which ended in a very disappointing performance and result that finished St Oliver Plunkett's ER 1-10 Réalt Dearg 'B' 0-3.
The evening began by a minutes silence which was respectfully observed by both sides in honour of the Plunketts' keeper Mick Dooley who recently passed away. Réalt Dearg would like to convey its deepest sympathies to the Dooley family on their recent bereavement. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.
Réalt Dearg started the game with the very strong wind behind their backs but were unable to take advantage in the opening exchange in which St Oliver Plunkett’s opened the scoring. A very disapointing half drew to a close with the scores standing at St Oliver Plunkett’s 4 points to 2 points for the Stars, both from frees.
The second half did see an improvement in work rate and performance but unfortunately the very strong wind was proving very dominant and St Oliver Plunkett’s duly took advantage tagging a run of 5 points alongside a goal to finish the second half strongly.
A disappointing performance and result for Réalt Dearg but luckily at this time of year it does not take long to make amends with the next fixture being Sunday 29th at 10am. The morning after a long night of sport on the telly. Thank you DCB.

Historic Championship Victory for Dearg 'A'

Réalt Dearg 2-13; Naomh Mearnóg 1-13
May 15, 2011
Réalt Dearg finally got the Mearnóg jinx off their backs with a superb 2-13 to 1-13 victory in the Championship played at Ringsend. With the help of a very strong wind, Stars went into a 1-9 to 0-2 lead at half time, the goal courtesy of wing forward, Eoghan Carroll.
Dearg backs were completely on top and were frustrating the Portmarnock forwards, limiting them to only a handful of chances. Down the other end, the forwards worked tirelessly to get possession and to put pressure on any attempted clearances. Plenty of ball was won by Chuck and Ryan at midfield, leading to an abundant supply for the inside line.
Réalt Dearg knew the strength of the wind would mean that Mearnóg had all the advantage in the second half and with free taker, Keith Lawler, going off injured at half time, the pressure was on.
Mearnóg used the strong breeze to launch long balls into their forwards and a few of those ended up in scores or frees (some baffling ones) for the black and amber men. Stars defenders were under serious pressure but were holding out well until midway through the second half when Naomh Mearnóg got the goal they so badly craved.
That goal left 3 between the sides and the pressure was being felt by the Terenure team when Mearnóg reduced the deficit shortly after to a single point thanks to frees. Points were exchanged until eventually Réalt Dearg led by 2 with a just a couple of minutes left.
It wasn’t over yet though. Naomh Mearnóg’s centre forward gained possession and ran at the Réalt Dearg goal before falling to the ground on the 21 yard line. The referee felt the need to give a free in and the Dearg men lined the goal. With just 2 between the sides and time nearly up, Mearnóg went for goal but it was superbly stopped by net minder, Gary Thompson, and cleared down the field. A small time later, the ball was sent in high to Stars full forward, Mike Butler, who grabbed it out of the air and dispatched it to the net. Dearg were 4 clear with time up. Mearnóg claimed a consolation point before the referee eventually called time on a famous victory for the men of Réalt Dearg.
Team on the day was- G. Thompson, Hesty, B. Kelly, J. Gallagher, Eoin O’D, Sharkey, Fitz, R. Ryan, Chuck, E. Carroll (1-3), Dinny (0-5, 1f), S. Tuohy, Lala (0-2f), Butler (1-2), J. McNamara (0-1).

Réalt Dearg 'B' Just Ousted by Lucan

Réalt Dearg 1-7; Lucan Sarsfields 2-9
May 15, 2011
Buoyed by their recent win over Fingallians, the Stars 'B' team took on Lucan Sarsfield in a 1pm throw in, which at the end of an entertaining and close championship game saw Lucan Sarsfields edge the encounter on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-7.
After a fairly frantic start to the game Lucan found themselves 1-1 to 0-1 after 15 minutes thanks to a fortunate goal. Ross Comerford pointed well from a free to give the Stars their opening score. The game settled down after that and was closely contested all over the pitch with Lucan enjoying the majority of territory in the Stars half.
25 minutes in after a great move started in Réalt Dearg half the ball was cleared up the field on the wing where Liam Lanigan picked out Cathal Mulkere who duly stuck it over the bar. It was nip and tuck the rest of of the half and after a bit of a shamozzle, the Lucan full forward received a fortunate yellow card in what some observers could have deemed more serious. Luckily the Dearg corner back is called Danger and not just for his similarity to the cartoon character and was able to dust himself down and carry on after the incident.
Lucan took full advantage of their slice of good luck and nicked another goal at the end of the half which left Lucan leading 2-1 to 0-2.
The second half took off in similiar fashion and Lucan scored the first point 10 minutes in after a few wides from both sides. Réalt Dearg hit back with a sweetly taken score from play by Ronan Moloney. This was answered by 2 points from Lucan in what was turning into a real end to end game. Réalt Dearg found the back of the net after some good approach play that was finished off by Wazu with some aplomb.
The game then entered its highest scoring period with both sides trading points from play. Cathal Mulkere got four in a row, the pick of which was a ball on the hop after a quick turn that the judges on Dancing on Ice would have been impressed with but this was no fancy Dan performance. Réalt Dearg were back with touching distance and could smell blood. There was only a goal in it towards the end but unfortunately after a sustained period of pressure which saw the Stars nearly get an equalising goal after a goal mouth scramble Lucan managed to clear their lines and get up the field to tag on the insurance point that made the game safe for them.
A disappointing defeat in the end but another performance to build on for the 'B’s who are still gelling as a team. A lot of positives to take from the game with some standout performances all over the pitch. A bit of positivity can lead us to the promised land.

It's Summertime, and the 'B's are Buzzing

Fingallians 0-4; Réalt Dearg 'B' 6-6
May 11, 2011
A great team performance from the Stars' 'B' team on Wednesday, 11th May, saw them beat Fingallians in the Championship on a scoreline of 6-6 to 0-4.
Réalt Dearg hit the ground running after a somewhat inspiring speech from Wazu before the game. Stars built up a commanding advantage at the break of 2-4 to 2 points having played with the wind.
Many would have expected Fingallians to come storming back into the game in the second half with wind advantage but the Réalt Dearg's fitness showed and saw them push on further in the game. Credit for this must go in a big way to new trainer Gary Kelly.
Best on the evening (second half played under lights) for Stars were Shane Murphy (2 goals this year and none so far with his hurley!!), Cathal Mulkere (with maybe the year's second best goal), James Doyle and midfield partnership of Pat Moran and O’Droma who covered a huge amount of ground and the 6 backs as a unit.
Special mention goes out to Eamonn Morris who turned up to referee the game at short notice.
Stars picked up a few niggly injuries that hopefully will have cleared up in time for Sundays clash with Lucan in Fortress Realt Dearg.
Team was - Mogzy, Gavin O’Connell, Derek Connolly, Conor Farrell, Ross Kelly, Killian Roberts, James Gallagher, Pat Moran, O’Droma, Ross Comerford, James Doyle, Rory O’Dwyer, Shane Murphy, Cathal Mulkere, Liam Lanigan.
Subs used - Eoin Ryan, Ronan Moloney, Shane Maher, Brian Mulcahy, Mark Conlon.

Crusheen (Clare) 2-13; Realt Dearg 2-5
April 22, 2011
Réalt Dearg were in Clare on Good Friday to play a challenge game against the hurlers of Crusheen. A huge crowd turned up to see the Dublin side put it up to the Claremen. The Westerners went in at half time just 2 points to the good on a scoreline of 9 points to 1-4, Stars' goal courtesy of Jack McNamara.
Dearg had just 16 on the day and it showed in the 2nd half as Crusheen pulled away and eventually ran out 2-13 to 2-5 winners. A good experience overall and a useful run out for Réalt Dearg as championship closes in.
Fair play to Crusheen as they provided refreshments and sandwiches after the game.
Team on the day was - Cathal Mulkere, Ronan Moloney, Wazu, Gavin O’Connell, Danger, Killian R, James Gallagher, Chubba, Peter Dilleen, James Kenny, Mike Butler (0-1), Eoghan Carroll, Keith Lawler (0-4), Jack McNamara (2-0) and John O'Loughlin. Shane Murphy was used as a sub.

Another Tough Game in Leinster
St Feichin's (Louth) 3-10; Réalt Dearg 1-10
March 30, 2011
Réalt Dearg travelled to Drogheda on a Wednesday evening to play their second Leinster League game in five days. The game was played under lights, on poor bumpy ground against a very good Louth side in St Feichin's.
A total of 35 Réalt Dearg players travelled to the game which saw the Dublin side fight hard throughout, eventually going down to St Feichin's by 2 goals.
The Réalt Dearg goal was scored early in the second half by Denis O'Sullivan but Stars were always playing catch up in the game. Onwards and upwards though, the match was good preparation for the Réalt Dearg teams as they head into the weekend of Dublin League fixtures.

Leinster League Debut for Réalt Dearg

Edenderry (Offaly) 0-10; Reált Dearg 1-06
March 26, 2011
Réalt Dearg played their first ever game outside Dublin on Saturday 26 March in the Leinster League. Stars suffered a narrow 1 point loss to a tough and game Edenderry side.
Keith Lawler got the scoring underway with a free after 8 minutes. Denis O'Sullivan got a point from play to put Réalt Dearg 2 points to 1 up after 10. Edenderry then scored 3 unanswered points as they looked to get a grip on the game before Denis popped up to grab another point to break their streak. Corner forward, Jack McNamara, latched onto a ball around the square to score the only goal of the game just before half time. Again, Réált Dearg went in at the break with a lead, this time with a score of 1-3 to 0-4.
Lawler got Stars on the front foot straight away with his second free and a win was looking likely for the Dublin side. However, with the help of former Offaly hurler and All-Ireland winner, Cillian Farrell (second half sub), Edenderry scored 6 points without reply. Réalt Dearg then came storming back in the last 10 minutes. Points from Chuck and another Lawler free left the minimum between the sides. However, the final whistle came too soon and Edenderry ran out winners on a score of 0-10 to 1-6.
A hard fought game that will stand to the Dublin hurling club in the long season ahead.

One That Got Away
St Patrick's Palmerstown 1-6; Réalt Dearg 'A' 0-5
March 20, 2011
Stars kicked off their league campaign with a loss against St Pat's Palmerstown. It really was a case of 'one that got away' as Réalt Dearg missed up to half a dozen glorious goal chances and notched up a big tally of wides from out the field also. Dearg should have had St Pat's well and truly out of sight by half time but only went into the break a couple of points up.
A strong breeze helped the Palmerstown side to get a grip on the game in the second half and they took the lead when they scored the only goal of the game. From there on, it was catch up for Réalt Dearg but time ran out and Stars suffered their second successive defeat of the season.
St Pat's won the county championship in a division higher than Réalt Dearg's last year so on the positive side it's good to see the ability to put it up to the top teams. Dearg were also missing quite a few players on the day too. A bit of shooting practice required but hopefully things will start to come together for an improving Réált Dearg side.

Bright Start to Year for 'Stars'

Naomh Mearnóg 1-13; Réalt Dearg ‘A’ 2-10
March 6, 2011
Réalt Dearg ‘A’ team began the 2011 season with a draw against Naomh Mearnóg in sunny Portmarnock in the Millar Shield.
Mearnóg had the better start to the game, slotting over two points from placed balls. Stars took a while to settle but eventually leveled before a quick ball into the forwards found corner forward, Jack McNamara, free to whip the ball first time into the top corner. Keith Lawler and captain, Trevor Jackman, traded frees with Mearnóg’s sharpshooter as the first half progressed.
A high ball into the Mearnóg goalmouth caused some consternation and the ball ended up in the net after Tom Doyle somehow scrambled it home.
Réalt Dearg went in at half time 5 points to the good and should have been more ahead. The backs had contained Mearnóg to just one point from play so far but Stars had been in this position before and were reluctant to let the lead slip this time.
A further two points had Stars 7 points clear before some indiscipline crept into their play and Mearnóg’s free-taker was more than willing to raise the white flag.
An injury to Richie Ryan (broken collar bone) took the momentum out of the game somewhat. Minutes later, Naomh Mearnóg got the goal they badly need after a half clearance landed into a Portmarnock player who crashed it to the net after a deflection on the way.
Down the other end, the Mearnóg ‘keeper was less busy than the first half and his side led by 2 going into the last 10 minutes. Reált Dearg plugged it back and points from Keith Lawler and Finian Dawson had them 1 point ahead with just a few minutes to go. A possible penalty for Stars was overlooked and Naomh Mearnóg cleared the ball down the field, winning the free that made the sides level in the end on a 2-10 to 1-13 scoreline.
Réalt Dearg were the more disappointed side as they had created plenty of chances to win the game but still earned a decent draw against a side they have yet to beat. There were good performances all over the pitch for Stars, who can take heart in their bright start to the season and look to bring their good showing forward to the upcoming games in the Leinster and Dublin Leagues.

A Star is Born

Given the prevailing mood of pessimism in the country, it’s all too easy to solely focus on the problems facing GAA Clubs because of the financial crisis and mass emigration. Peer through the gloom, though, and the edifying stories of a brand new Hurling Club, established in Dublin last year, appears like a green shoot in a seemingly barren landscape.
When Pádraig Ó Chaoimh initiated the drive to establish a Club in every parish in the country, it is fair to say the former Secretary General of the GAA probably did not envisage that some day social media such and Internet chat rooms would play key roles in establishing modern day GAA Clubs.
Chaoimh, however, had not reckoned with the innovative people behind the newest Hurling Club in the capital, Réalt Dearg.
Hurling fans in the capital will already be familiar with the Réalt Dearg success story. A passion for hurling and the unbridled enthusiasm of its members, as well as a proactive approach to promoting the Club and recruiting new members, has seen the Terenure-based Club make remarkable strides since its foundation a little over a year ago.
Two like-minded small ball devotees, Clare man Jack McNamara and Kilkenny native Liam Lanigan, noticed the ancient game was poorly catered for in the Ranelagh/Terenure/Rathmines area of the city and decided to take the matter into their own hands. The idea of forming a new Club was floated on the popular GAA website An Fear Rua and other Internet forums and the overwhelmingly positive response convinced the pair to pursue the project.
Nine people attended their first meeting in November 2009, but by the time of their first game in AHL Division 9 in March 2010, their ranks had swelled to 19. Given their base in the largely transient suburbs of south Dublin, it is hardly surprising that their player base is predominantly drawn from non-Dublin natives.
“We only have one or two guys from Dublin because if you grew up in Dublin then you are in an established Club. By and large it would be people from down the country – there are a lot of lads from Kilkenny, Clare, Limerick and places like that,” says Club Secretary and founding member Liam Lanigan. “
“We also wanted to attract people who had never played before, so we have a German player and we had French players last year and a Canadian player. In terms of putting down roots in the community it will take a lot longer.”
Although they enjoyed considerable success in their first season - including an appearance in the semi-final of the Junior F County Championship and two league victories – not having a pitch to call their own was a constant headache. They endured an itinerant existence, training anywhere from Sandymount Strand to Bushy Park in the early days and renting pitches from Thomas Davis and St James’ Gaels, Crumlin. They also relied on the goodwill of Clubs like Faughs and St Judes as well as the Dublin County Board, who made pitches available to them.
“We didn’t end up finding a pitch last year and had to play all of our games away from home. In terms of training, we used public parks – Bushy Park mainly. It wasn’t ideal because sometimes we would get there and there were people already on the pitch and you can’t really do anything about that,” Lanigan continues.
“At the moment we would categorise ourselves as more of a team than a Club until such time as we have our own facilities. We are aware that a lot of Clubs arise in the city and then disappear because people come from the country and then leave and that’s it.
“To become a properly established Club in the long-term, the main way of developing that is to have a proper underage structure and become a part of the community, particularly in Terenure, which is our base now.”
Membership has swelled to 53 players on the back of a clever recruitment drive that has involved spreading the word online and increasing the Club’s visibility in their catchment area with a striking poster campaign featuring the unmistakable Réalt Dearg crest.
Their success in attracting new members has served to further highlight their need for a permanent home, however, as they have entered a second team into the AHL Division 9 and the Junior F Championship this year.
It’s not the only headache for the embryonic Club though; attracting a manager has proven equally as challenging.
“At the moment all the management decisions, selection and all of that is down to the players. Players taking training sessions isn’t an ideal situation by any means,” Lanigan continues.
“We’re really eager to get a manager on board. A major priority for us at the moment is to attract people interested in management, selection and training. We need as many as possible because we have two teams that are dependent on the players themselves.”
Logistical difficulties aside, Lanigan says the entire project has been far more successful than he could have imagined when the idea was dreamed up 16 months ago.
“The first question we asked when we were setting the whole thing up was whether we could actually have a team and get 15 players. I really wasn’t expecting to get such an overwhelming response,” he says.
“Especially the speed that all of it has happened. When we had six people out at our first training session, if someone told me that a year on we would have two teams then I would never have believed them.”
