Second Half Salvo Sees Stars Take the Spoils
Réalt Dearg 5-8; Cuala 0-7
AHL 7, 23 September 2012
A blistering 10 minute spell following the half time break saw Réalt Dearg record a crucial win against Cuala in Div. 7 of the hurling league. However, it looked doubtful for some time as a tough Cuala outfit refused to yield during the first half and despite the aid of a strong breeze Réalt Dearg went to the break just 2 points to the good.
Given the side had not played competitively since they bowed out in the Junior D championship semi-final to Raheny 3 weeks before it was understandable that cob-webs would be present for this early Sunday morning game. The appearance of star wing back Ronan Moloney in a pair of spandex cycling shorts for the warm-up was perhaps a reflection of the lack of focus that can sometimes take your average Junior hurler. Thankfully, such a frightening sight was just temporary and the Mailman took the pitch looking a little more composed in someone's spare shorts.
But Moloney's inadherence to acceptable matchday uniform was just the beginning in a manifestation of just how rusty any side can get. For all intensive purposes Réalt Dearg created a hatful of chances in the first half but struggled to hammer home a clear sense of authority. Indeed, but for some decent goal keeping from Gary Thompson and solid defending from Eoin Fitzpatrick and Cathal Hester in front of him Cuala could easily have led at the half time break with a strong wind to come. It wasnt that Réalt Dearg werent hurling and for that matter they created numerous opportunities for goals but as is often the case they passed up the sure-fire points for majors and consequently brought a very determined Cuala keeper into the game. Numerous saves, interceptions, blocks and hooks kept full forwards Kevin Ryan and Eugene Kenny at bay and when the Cuala rear guard wasnt holding out the woodwork came to their rescue. Both Kenny and Ryan tormented their markers, but it was Richie Ryan who raisesd the first green flag with a well taken goal 10 minutes in. Both sides had exchanged early points at this stage with Réalt Dearg well on top of possession stakes. A couple of well taken points from John Tarpey and Liam Breen put Réalt Dearg into a less than convincing 1-3 to 0-4 lead at the break.
The half time gap was an emphasis of how a team can change its focus without the need for harsh words or critcisms and following same Réalt Dearg seemed to flick a switch thereafter. Points came from Tarpey and Richie Ryan while defensively the half back line of Eoin "Ninja" O'Dwyer, Trevor Jackman and Ronan "Lance" Moloney excelled. With a solid platform at the back now bombarding the Cuala defence and with breathing space established the Réalt Dearg ran riot. Richie Ryan, now operating at full forward, produced a wonderful second half performance while Kevin Ryan was also to the fore. Further out the field Eoghan Carroll and John Tarpey dominated while Liam Breen, Shane Touhy and Eugene Kenny produced the necessary dogwork. The game was put to bed mid way through the second half when a quickfire spell saw both Ryan's find the net in quick succession.
Cuala worked hard to regain some chance of a comeback but substitute Killian Roberts made crucial interceptions while Thompson, Hester and Fitzpatrick continued to put through an excellent shift. Fittingly, the final say was left to Shane Touhy whose blistering run and shot saw the net shake and despite some confusion as to whether the ball had infact crossed the line the referee awarded the score and it was no more than the hard working Touhy deserved!

SEMI-FINAL EXIT FOR THIRD-YEAR-IN-A-ROW

Raheny 1-13; Réalt Dearg 1-9
Junior D Championship Semi-Final
For the third year in succession Réalt Dearg fell at the penultimate hurdle in their quest to win Championship honours going down 1-13 to 1-9 to a strong Raheny side in an early Sunday morning Junior D Semi final.
The A side got off to the worst possible start within a minute of the throw in when the Raheny centre forward broke onto a loose ball and goaled from the most acute of angles.
Gradually the team settled into a rhythm with the defence getting on top and holding a strong Raheny forward line to three points from placed balls for the remainder of the half.
John Tarpey, Eugene Kenny, Tom Doyle and Richie Ryan all raised white flags and despite the early concession of the goal, Réalt Dearg were in a good position as the teams went in for the interval level at 1-3 to 0-6.
The first 10 minutes of the second half was the key stage however. Raheny hit the front straight from the restart and added four more points without reply during this period to put daylight between the teams.
To the credit of all involved, the Stars refused to lie down and rallied to create intense pressure in the Raheny goalmouth. Tom Doyle goaled but it came too late in the day to salvage anything from the game and an impressive Raheny ran out four point winners and will go on to face Kilmacud Crokes in the Junior D final.
Despite the Championship exit, the league season continues for Réalt Dearg A's with the possibility of qualifying for a League final and promotion still in the balance.
Panel: Mike Butler, Eoin Fitz, Cathal Hester, Brad Harte, Eoin O'Dwyer, Trevor Jackman, Ronan Moloney, Eoghan Carroll, John Tarpey, Denis O'Sullivan, Eugene Kenny, Liam Breen, Richie Ryan, Tom Doyle, Kevin Ryan, Gary Thompson, Peter Dileen, Ultan Dillon, John Coffey, Killian Roberts, Aidan Heffernan, Shane Tuohy (inj)

IMPRESSIVE WIN FOR DEARG B IN CHAMPIONSHIP

Fingallians 3-3; Réalt Dearg 'B' 4-10
Junior F Championship, 19th July, 2012
The stars have had a mixed run of form in the Junior F championship this year and as a result tonight’s match was a matter of making something happen or leaving the vicinity of the pot. Without a win against Fingallians there would be no chance at qualification for quarter final stages of this year’s championship. The same applied for Fingallians. Given the previous league result of a draw between both teams this was set to be a closely contested encounter.
The match started smartly with Shane Murphy, calling on the stick, finding the net from a breaking ball in the forward line. This was followed shortly by both Stephen Roche and Jack Mac beating the keeper to build up an early lead. Fingallians were remaining dangerous around the square with an obvious target man mooching on the 5 yard line however Pat Moran did an excellent job of marshalling him throughout.
An early belt from the centre forward saw Cian O’Brien roused into an excellent performance in the centre back position. The breaking ball was being cleaned up by Réalt Dearg at the back which allowed for plenty of ball to be played into the forwards. The half back line was on form and played very intelligent ball to the free men in midfield. Excellent long range scores from David Ridge and James Kenny kept the scoreboard going and lifted the team and provided the correct responses to goals scored by the home team. All this coupled with honest hard work allowed Réalt Dearg to stay in control of the match and maintain a comfortable lead.
It has to be said that all over the field, performances were lifted from recent form, after all this is championship.
Top scorer was Stephen Roche finishing with a total 2-3 from play.

STARS INTO THE QUARTERS FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW

Réalt Dearg 'A' 2-11; Faughs 2-7
Junior D Championship, 5th July 2012
Réalt Dearg finished the group stage of the Championship with a fine win over Faughs on the all weather pitch in Thomas Davis on Thursday night. Needing a win to guarantee qualification to the quarter finals, the Stars got off to a perfect start when Shane Tuohy, looking fresh after his mid season training camp in Poland, batted the ball to the net within the first minute.
Unfortunately this didn't prevent a nervy opening quarter and Faughs were the first side to settle in what was a crucial group game for both sides.
Réalt Dearg went into the game without the injured Gary Thompson, Trevor Jackman and John Coffey with Mike Butler stepping into the number one jersey in Thompsons absence. Butler, ever the source of mazy solo runs to utilize his blistering pace, found himself taking on one man too many in the first 10 minutes and Faughs finished a freakish goal to the net which was followed closely by a second green flag after another defensive mix up.
Captain John Tarpey rallied the troops however and Réalt Dearg finished the half well with points from Tarpey and Denis O'Sullivan to leave the stars one point ahead at the interval.
There was little between the sides for most of the second half, Réalt Dearg's backline shook off their nervy start to gain the ascendancy with Ultan Dillon, Eoin Fitz and Peter Dileen getting in important clearances and Eoghan Carroll sweeping up midfield.
Gradually Réalt Dearg upped the gears with points from Tarpey and Liam Breen and midway through the half Richie Ryan, who caused problems for Faughs throughout, finished to the net to finally put daylight between the sides. Tom Doyle scored a superb long range point and from there on Faughs layed siege to the Dearg goal in an attempt to claw their way back into the game. Butler made amends for his earlier Bruce Grobbelaar impressions to deny Faughs late on and the Stars held out for a four point win.
While improvements will be needed to progress further in the Championship, Thursday was all about getting the two points on the board and guaranteeing a home quarter final. Next up, a top of the table league clash against Kilmacud Crokes.
Mike Butler, Ultan Dillon, Cathal Hester, Eoin Fitz, Eoin O'Dwyer, Peter Dileen, Ronan Moloney, Eoghan Carroll, John Tarpey, Shane Tuohy, Tom Doyle, Liam Breen, Denis O'Sullivan, Richie Ryan, Kevin Ryan. Subs - Killian Roberts, Brad Harte, Aidan Heffernan.

Dearg 'A' Back on Track

Réalt Dearg 'A' 1-16; Naomh Olaf 1-8
Junior D Championship, 13th May 2012
The Réalt Dearg ‘A’ got their championship back on track with a superb 8 point win over Naomh Olaf on a blustery Sunday afternoon in Kiltipper Road. Having lost the first round game to Skerries, the team needed a performance and a result to ensure some momentum and confidence was garnered heading into Round 3. They duly obliged.
Dearg got off to a 0-3 to nil lead courtesy of points from Tarpey and Aidan Heffernan before Olaf finally registered their first score 10 minutes into the game from a 21 yard free. Réalt Dearg had most of the possession and good play from Eoin O’Dwyer and centre forward, Doyle resulted in points for Tarpey and Carroll at midfield.
A point from wing back Peter Dilleen saw the Stars race into an 0-8 to 0-3 lead as half time approached. A long range point from Eoghan Carroll had Dearg firmly in stride. Some great defensive play from Dillon and Hester led to goal chances at the far end from Heffernan and Carrol, both of which were saved. A resulting 65 point gave Dearg a 0-10 to 0-3 lead at half time having played with the strong wind.
Another Tarpey free gave an 0-11 to 0-3 cushion before Denis O’Sullivan raced clear on goal and was fouled in the process with the referee not affording him the preferred advantage. John Coffey was replaced by Kevin Ryan after the former had picked up a bad hand injury in the first half. Some good play from Liam Breen saw him pick a point before Olaf asserted their only bit of dominance in a 10 minute spell following.
A long range Doyle point had Dearg 7 points ahead (0-14 to 0-7) before the arrival of Mike Butler and Richie Ryan into the game. Olaf had more of the ball now and were finally rewarded with the first goal of the game after a long free was tipped to the net by their corner forward at the edge of the square. Olaf tails were up and a free just after had the score at 0-15 to 1-8. The pressure was on the Stars now.
A long puck out found Richie Ryan and the ball ended up in the hands of Butler who duly struck the ball past the Olaf keeper with just minutes to go. A free just at the end from Tarpey then gave Dearg a 1-16 to 1-8 win. Onwards to the 3rd Round and Clanna Gael.

Dearg Downed by Title Holders

Skerries Harps 3-7; Réalt Dearg 'A' 2-7
Junior D Championship, 29th April 2012
Réalt Dearg ‘A’ fell to reigning Division E County Champions, Skerries Harps on a windswept pitch in the first Round of the Junior D Championship. Dearg had the bare 15 players on the day plus Aidan Heffernan, who had his first match experience for the club.
Skerries made use of the elements getting off to the brighter start. Dearg soon found their way into the game and were nip and tuck for most of the first half, with scores from Dinny, Tuohy, Tarpey and Coffey.
Skerries breached the tight Dearg defence and hit a stinging shot which brought out a great save from Gary Thompson in goal. However, a miscued clearance from the rebound found a lurking Skeries forward who stuck it in the net. Dearg had it all to do now.
Soon after, a long free from Tarpey found Doyle who laid it off for John Coffey to hit a first time shot to the bottom corner of the Skerries net. The Stars were back in it with just 2 seperating the teams at half-time.
The second half saw Skerries deploy an extra defender to try curtail any advantage Dearg may have from the gusting wind. For the whole second half Réalt Dearg were on top in most departments and missed several goal chances, many due to excellent saves from the Skerries ‘keeper. A high ball into the Stars goal went all the way to the net and the away side found themselves on the backfoot again.
A couple of points from John Tarpey got Dearg back into the game before Dinny collected a clearance and raced all the way through before rattling the net. In the final minutes all the play was from Réalt Dearg and more game winning goal chances were missed.
The referre blew the whistle with the home team 3 points to the good. A game Réalt Dearg should have won and now find themselves needing a win in the 2nd Round against Naomh Olaf to get their Championship in gear.
Team: G. Thompson, U. Dillon, C. Hester, E. Fitzpatrick, K. Roberts, J. Tarpey, R. Moloney, E. Carroll, E. O'Dwyer, D. O'Sullivan, L. Breen, P. Dilleen, T. Doyle, S. Tuohy, J. Coffey.

B Team Maintain Winning Momentum

O'Dwyers 0-8; Réalt Dearg 'B' 2-9
Junior F Championship, 29th April 2012
Any Given Sunday, All-Ireland morning, Amen corner at the Masters, a long Winter of fire-side chats on past glories from Jack McNamara. This is it, the pinnacle of all endeavours – Dublin Junior F Championship, first round.
Then again, the freezing wind was howling in from a grey Irish Sea over a patchy pitch in Balbriggan. The wags remained firmly ensconced in their Bentleys and had the Goodyear blimp taken off for the occasion, it would have been last seen blowing backwards out over Miltown-Malbay. So Réalt Dearg seconds commenced their championship campaign against a physically imposing, high-riding O’Dwyers team.
Affairs began brightly for Realt Dearg against the elements with a neat pointed free, as both sides strived to settle in the difficult conditions. On 10 minutes, Harry ‘the Rock’ Stone effected a lightening goal-line clearance, which O’Dwyers duly converting the consequential ‘65’. Utilising the wind the home team started to press, pointing again, despite strong resistance from Gavin O’Connell in the corner to make it 0-02 to 0-01. James Kenny and Eoin Morrissey were defending from high up the pitch but any hard-won possession came to no end with the vagaries of the wind. Finally ‘Wazoo’ O’Brien intervened to take a score to level matters 21 minutes in. Ed Kavanagh continued bursting out from the back before Stephen Roche was unlucky not to goal from a scorching shot from an acute angle to restore the lead.
On 26 minutes, Danger Deady decided to further embellish his safety adverse reputation by thoroughly enraging the largest 3 individuals in the contest in a classic ‘schmozzle’ affair, before matters resolved themselves once heads came together. Approaching the half, David Ridge cleared solidly from centre-back before a Jack Mac free was met by a high speed connection from Roche to find the net in a crucial score. O’Dwyers hit back with a point from 30m out before the teams swopped goal bound shots at either end. The half ended with a 1-3 to 0-3 lead to Réalt Dearg against the arctic wind in what some may regard as a miracle akin to a Kilkenny football goal.
The second half quickly flicked into life with Réalt Dearg now utilising the elements with a neat point front the irrepressible Roche upfront. This was quickly added to by a Jack Mac free from 40 m out to give real daylight to the lead at 1-5 to 0-3. However, these affairs appear to spur on the home team who rattled off 4 points over a breathless 9 minutes spell, with Réalt Dearg looking suddenly stretched in midfield and the half forward divisions.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man – as centre forward Eoin Morrissey collected the sliotar on half-way and drove on, like a Chinese motorway project through a medium-sized town, to blast home a beautiful goal. Now, the Dearg again had the ascendency with further points from Jack Mac from play and a placed ball to make it 2-7 to 0-7. Liam Lanigan in the corner managed to initially distract, then entice out, then side step, then distract again, the opposition keeper but his ghosting pass was intercepted before reaching a team mate for a certain open goal.
After 47 minutes a link pass from ‘Chubba’ set Morrissey clear to tap over another score. O’Dwyers efforts failed to yield scores and Barry Ruth released Roche, now at centre-forward, to win a 21 yard free which was duly converted. In the final seconds, O’Dwyers clawed back a point but Realt Dearg were worthy winners with efficient hurling at 2-9 to 0-8 in the atrocious conditions. So, the momentum builds further for this day’s winners, Realt Dearg B (and the residents of Hamlet Lane sliotar collection).
Bring on the Summer. Please.

Counsel Dance to Lanigan's Ball

Good Counsel 1-8; Réalt Dearg 'B' 2-9
E. Barron Shield, 24th April 2012
The jury may be out on whether the sunny Tuesday fixture prior to the first Championship match of the year, or childhood dreams of the E Barron Shield glory were the primary reason - but Réalt Dearg B had a full squad to select from for this clash against Good Counsel.
The Dearg started somewhat sluggishly conceding a pointed 65 in the first minute and enduring a prolonged period of pressure from a lively a Good Counsel team. The back division were in good form with lengthy clearances from Ed Kavanagh and David Ridge, and Eoin Morrissey hit back with a well struck point from centre forward to even the score.
Good Counsel came again with 2 quick points in succession before Eoin Morrissey answered again to make it 0-03 to 0-02 halfway through the first period. Midfield energy from James Kenny and Derek Chubba Connelly started to bare fruit as Jack Mac cracked over another point. The game see-sawed in the middle third of the field at this stage, with the sides amassing an impressive tally of side-line balls. Morrissey and full-forward Stephen Roche starting linking up to good effect but failed to get their rewards. Both sides swopped pointed frees just before the half time leaving it wide open, at 0-04 apiece at the break.
Squad rotation was in evidence at half time as three substitutes entered the fray in the forwards. On the resumption Good Counsel hit another point for the lead. Impressive debutant Colm Brennan at corner back unfortunately went down with an achilles injury which Good Counsel took full advantage to flick home a potentially crucial goal to lead 1-5 to 0-04. Réalt Dearg 2012 however are made of stern stuff and answered with another pointed free. Gavin O’Connell was now firing on all cylinders at the back until his six pack was well and truly tested by a wild pull. He was unfazed but the Good Counsel man saw the line in an otherwise very sporting match.
Now the game momentum began to swing decisively, with an excellent long range point from James Kenny. Liam Lanigan, who had been making a thorough nuisance of himself in the full forward line then netted the sliotar in the net to give Réalt Dearg the lead for the first time in the match 1-06 to 1-05. Shortly afterwards, Stephen Roche buried another goal with a first-time flick to extend the lead further.
Good Counsel responded with a period of possession but hit several wides, before whizzing the ball inches outside the post and an unflinching Harry Stone. They finally did succeed in hitting 2 points in succession. Jack MacNamara continued his one-man crusade to rid the planet of ash trees before then pointing, followed in kind by Derek Connelly. Eoin Morrissey then hit a final point after a storming run through the middle to seal the victory on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-8.
Réalt Dearg can look forward to Championship fare this weekend with continued momentum and a first ever victory over this days opponents.
Bring it On.

B Team Join Frontrunners on Top of the League

Raheny 2-7: Réalt Dearg 'B' 2-10
AHL 9, April 15th, 2012
Having missed out on their previous league fixture due to the opposition's inability to field a team, Réalt Dearg "B" were in a hungry mood Sunday for this AHL 9 outing against Raheny in sunny St. Anne's Park. This was reflected in the opening minutes as the stars scored three unanswered points that were to remain the difference for the rest of the afternoon. This initial burst of intensity waned a little as the half wore on, however the home side failed to capitalise, racking up a lot of wides. As the half progressed, an assured performance from O'Connell, Ruth and Kelly in the full back line gradually started to stem the tide, and the dominance that Raheny had been establishing at the puck out was brought under control through trojan work by James Kenny and Mick Butler in midfield.
Dearg re-doubled their efforts in the second half, and were rewarded with excellent goals by Eoin Morrissey and Shane Murphy, while the Jack Attack was in full force on the frees, which Raheny began to cough up with increasing frequency as the pressure was put on. While Raheny were brave and relentless in attack, scoring two goals themselves at the other end, their habit of holding onto nippy corner forwards and fighting "like ould women" to quote the very consistent referee tended to undermine a lot of their own hard work.
The final minutes were "squeeky bum time" for the stars, as Raheny piled ball onto the backs, but it was all to no avail, and Realt Dearg held onto the three point lead earned in the opening minutes to go joint top of the league.
Team: Harry Stone, Gavin O’Connell, Barry Ruth, Brian Goose Kelly, Cian O’Brien, David Ridge, Ed Kavanagh, Mick Butler (capt), James Kenny, Jack McNamara, Eoin Morrissey, Derek Connolly, Liam Lanigan, Stephen Roche, Shane Murphy.

Bad Day at the Office But a Win is a Win

Naomh Barróg 2-5; Réalt Dearg 'A' 2-6
AHL 7, April 15th, 2012
Réalt Dearg continued their unbeaten run in AHL7 on Sunday in an away game to Naomh Barróg. The stars made a very slow start but finally came to life after Danger Deady cooly finished a Doyle pass to the net midway through the first half.
Points from John Coffey and Denis O'Sullivan followed to leave Réalt Dearg four points up at half time.
A poor second half performance followed in which the Stars never got into their rhythm.
The backline, under pressure, held firm through good performances by Cathal Hester, Ronan Moloney and Ultan Dillon and the midfield duo of Eoghan Caroll and Peter Dileen covered a lot of ground but scoring oppertunities were at a premium with just Danger Deady and John Coffey getting on the scoresheet in the second half.
Luckily for Dearg, a 65 was tipped to the net by one of Barróg's own defenders. A score that proved vital in the end.
Réalt Dearg were reduced to 14 for the last 2 minutes following some dissent shown to the referee by one of our more senior players (ie Tom Doyle) but the Stars held out under late pressure to run out one point winners.
Team: Gary Thompson, Ultan Dillon, Cathal Hester, Brad Harte, Killian Roberts, Eoin Fitzpatrick, Ronan Moloney, Eoghan Carroll, Peter Dileen, Denis O'Sullivan, Lorcan Brennan, John Coffey, Kevin Deady, Tom Doyle, Eoin O'Dwyer.

Réalt Dearg 'A' 12-17; Round Towers 0-06
AHL 7, March 25th, 2012
Réalt Dearg 'A' kept up their winning record in the League after a comprehensive 47 point defeat of Rpund Towers on a warm, sunny March after noon in Thomas Davis.
Much to the chagrin of Towers, Dearg had to play 13-a-side as they only had 17 players on the day, including two injured players, Brad Harte and Ronan Moloney.
The extra space in the forward line however, was perfect for the return of Denis O'Sullivan to the lineup. He amassed a total of 7-4 on the day and was a thorn in the Towers' side all throughout. A handful of goals from Denis and one each from Tom Doyle and new star, John Coffey, had the game done and dusted after 20 minutes. Towers offered little challenge during the entire game and resorted to fouling to slow down Dearg's momentum. The Stars kept their heads though and continued to play to the end, offering no mercy to the scoreline. An excellent defence and midfield helped Dearg keep a clean sheet for the second league game in a row.
Richie Ryan finally got in on the scoring act, bagging his first goal 15 mins from the end of the game. He would add a further two to his tally one of which should have been a simple pass for a Goose goal!!!
In truth, the game was of little use to Dearg but it brings their points tally to 4 in the league, adding to the first round win over Clanna Gael.

Friday Night Fright for the Gaels

Realt Dearg A side got their League season off to a flyer on Friday under the floodlights in a low scoring encounter away to Clanna Gael. The game started in dramatic fashion as the referee brandished red cards to a member of each side for an off the ball altercation with the game still in the opening minutes.
Despite playing with the aid of a very strong wind the Stars were slow getting out of the traps, with the extra space being utilised to good effect by the home side.
Team Captain John Tarpey showed the way in the first half landing two long range points in what was a fantastic individual display, but it looked like the Stars had a mountain to climb at half time, going in level and having to play against the elements in the second half.
A superb battling display after the interval was rewarded with two well taken goals by Richie Ryan and Shane Tuohy at vital times along with a great individual point from Denis O'Sullivan.
The Stars defence, well marshalled by keeper Gary Thompson and full back Cathal Hester, held firm against a pacey forward line to record a one point win 2-3 to 0-8.
Round Towers provide the opposition in the next round of the league on 25th March and the A side will be eager to build on this good start to the season.

You Don't Have to Be Mad, But it Helps

One of the newest hurling clubs in Dublin, Realt Dearg, need a goalkeeper. Urgently. Are you mad man enough to help out?
By Sean Nolan
They say goalkeepers in all sports are mad but hurling goalkeepers may be the maddest of all. With only a skimpy bit of O’Neills finest between you and a bullet-hard sliotar, you have to be made of stern stuff to stand between the posts in hurling.
So if you think you have what it takes, or are too crazy to know any better, then Realt Dearg want to talk to you. The club’s Vice Chairman James Kenny got in touch with JOE today to tell us the plight his club faces.
“The goalie we had last year has a back injury,” James tells me. “And he is out for the season. Our first league match is on Sunday and we are desperately looking for a goalkeeper to come in.”
Realt Dearg, based in the Terenure area of Dublin, have two teams playing at Junior level in Dublin, an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team. And while the ‘A’ team have managed to string together back-to-back promotions, the focus this year is to try and get the B team out of the basement of Dublin hurling. And they need a keeper to do that.
As James says, the have managed to convince one of the outfield lads to go in goal on Sunday, but ideally they need someone who wants to be there, and has been there before.
“We have a lad [for Sunday] but he is not too keen to do it all season,” he tells me and that is what prompted the cry for help.
In fairness, that the club even exists is testimony to the power of social media. Set up in 2009, Realt Dearg gets its members chiefly through Facebook and Twitter. They spotted a gap for a hurling team in the Terenure/Rathmines/Ranelagh area and now, almost three years later, they have 60 lads.
To tweak a Micháel Ó Muircheartaigh phrase, Dublin 6 is not exactly a hurling stronghold, a fact James acknowledges. But they are making progress to address that, albeit slowly.
“We don’t discriminate against anyone who has never played hurling before, we’ll take anyone who comes along and show them what to do. This year we have had a few Dubs register with us, up to this year we only had one in the club, so it is good to get a few Dublin accents around the place,” he says.
Down the line the club would like to have a camogie team, and some underage teams, but for now, the focus is on getting one man with the right mix to help them out of this very urgent problem.
“We just need someone with a good bit of experience. Experience, crazy, likes the craic; that’s the job description,” says James.
Well, any takers? If you are interested just contact Realt Dearg on Twitter @realtdearg or e-mail them at realtdearg.hurlingclub@gmail.com.
